Beryllium, atomic number 4, belongs to the second major group and is the lightest alkaline earth metal element. Beryllium metal is steel gray, melting point 1283℃, boiling point 2570℃, density 1.848g/cm³. There are three natural isotopes of beryllium: Beryllium 7, beryllium 8, beryllium 10, and beryllium 9Be is the only stable nuclide of beryllium. There are about 30 kinds of beryllium ore, with economic value of the main beryl (3BeO•AlO3•6SiO2), silica beryllium (2BeO•SiO2), chrysoberyl (BeO•Al2O3) and other several, the world’s most abundant beryllium resources of the country is the United States, beryllium supply is mainly the United States and China. As the first member of alkali earth metal, beryllium is a rare light metal with low density, high melting point, large elastic modulus, large tensile strength, excellent thermal properties, good dimensional stability, small neutron absorption cross section, good X-ray transmission and many other excellent properties. Beryllium is an irreplaceable material in aerospace, aviation, electronics and nuclear industry and other fields. “Space metal”.
